Crappy video games explained

Kotaku is one of my favorite blogs. As an avid gamer, I find they have generally relevant content on a daily basis. I wasn’t expecting this gem, though: Wii Games Hit The Bargain Bin Faster Than PS3, 360 Ones.

While the summary of the article is fairly obvious, as anyone that has been to a big box store recently has seen the glut of (for example) Petz titles that should really be thrown into the nearest bonfire or airlock.

In particular, I found this part particularly revealing:

Looking at how long it takes a game to enter “price protection”, which is a term used for when a publisher – having noticed a game isn’t selling very well – lowers the wholesale cost of a game so that retailers can keep it on the shelves at full price, even when the public are ignoring it. What they’ve found is that this practice occurs for 7.5% of 360 games. And 9.09% of PS3 games. But the Wii? It happens for 15.1% of titles.

[18:29] Hillary: Because it’s cheaper for the store to put shitty games on the shelf, and they make more money per sale than the good ones. Got it.

I just got an xbox 360, and a few games for it. So, give me your gamertags! Mine is “disavian” ; I used to have “disavitor” but they wouldn’t let me renew the older one that I’d canceled after I stopped playing video games for a while. Kind of a dick thing of them to do, but it didn’t bother me too much; just had to use my other name.

Also, if you have a Wii, give me your Wii friend code. Mine is 4007 2749 6509 4356. As with many people that have experienced other systems conceived since 1997, I really dislike the Wii’s friend code system. Seriously, it’s far worse than the original xbox’s system, and that had been out for how long before you released the Wii?

Wii Sports Box

It has always annoyed me that Wii Sports comes in a crappy cardboard cover. Does anyone want to get together and buy some Wii DVD boxes (available on the Nintendo Online Store)? I’d buy just one for myself, but you save on shipping this way.

Once you have a cool white DVD case in your hand, you can print up a custom cover and stick it in there; here’s a site with some for Wii Sports: The Cover Project

I finally got one! I was reading Kotaku at 4am Sunday, and he said that Best Buy would have >15 Wiis per store. Not having gone to bed yet, I figured, why not? So I grabbed some supplies, got up, drove to Best Buy, and waited.

And waited. And waited. Etc.

So I was first in line, and eventually got my Wii and a copy of Wii Play. So, I will now endeavor to set it up and maybe play some Wii Sports.
